No17 Praying Hands
The "prayer plants" are named after a special feature: at nightfall they fold their leaves in an upright position, as if praying for evening vespers. With the first light of day, the leaves open again and fill us with a quiet, soothing rustling. There are over 50 different species of prayer plants that are native to the Brazilian rainforest. The plant has many uses; the Arawak in South America, for example, used the strength of the plant's rhizome to draw poison out of wounds. But it's not just their biological qualities that make them so unique - their leaves are a lovely sight, looking like hand-drawn patterns. Each leaf is unique, which also makes them very popular as houseplants.
